# Epson WorkForce WF-3640: A Discontinued Printer That Still Has a Working Driver
The Epson WorkForce WF-3640 is a mid-range all-in-one that Epson stopped selling around 2017. It prints, scans, copies, and faxes — and the hardware is solid enough that plenty of people are still running one. The discontinuation didn’t break the printer; it just created confusion about where to get drivers.
Epson’s main support search doesn’t always surface the WF-3640 prominently, and the page layout has changed over the years. The driver is still there. Here’s where it is and how to install it correctly.
Where to Find the Driver
Go to epson.com/support and in the search box, type “WF-3640” exactly. The product page for the WorkForce WF-3640 should appear. If you’re in the US, the URL will be something like epson.com/cgi-bin/ceStore/… — the URL structure for older products differs from current ones.
Alternatively, search Google for site:epson.com WF-3640 drivers — this often surfaces the exact support page faster than Epson’s own navigation.
On the WF-3640 support page, you’ll see:
Drivers and Utilities Combo Package — The complete install. This is what you want.
Epson Scan 2 Utility — A standalone scanner application. The combo package includes it, but you can install this separately if you need to reinstall just the scanner.
Firmware — For the printer itself, not the PC driver. You don’t need this unless Epson’s site specifically prompts you to update firmware.
The Drivers and Utilities Combo Package for the WF-3640 is labeled for Windows 10, but installs and functions correctly on Windows 11. Epson didn’t release a Windows 11-specific version for this model, but the underlying driver architecture hasn’t changed enough to make the Windows 10 package incompatible.
The Correct Install Sequence
Remove any previously installed Epson software before running the new installer. If you already have a partial install or a version installed from a third-party site, use “Add or remove programs” in Windows Settings to uninstall any Epson entries, then clear the driver from Device Manager (right-click → Uninstall device → Delete driver software).
After that cleanup:
Run the Drivers and Utilities Combo Package installer. Choose “Network” or “USB” depending on how you’re connecting. For USB connections, don’t plug in the cable until the installer prompts you.
When the installer completes, restart the computer.
After restarting, open Device Manager and verify that the WF-3640 appears under Printers with a Canon driver provider (it should show Seiko Epson Corporation). If it shows Microsoft, the Windows-provided generic driver got installed instead of the Epson package.
Getting the Scanner Working
The WF-3640’s scanner is the part that most people have trouble with. The Epson Scan 2 utility is the primary scanner application for this model.
After the combo package install, search for “Epson Scan 2” in Start menu. If it doesn’t appear, it may not have installed — rerun the combo installer and make sure Epson Scan 2 is selected in the component list during the install.
Epson Scan 2 offers three scan modes: Full Auto, Office, and Professional. For document scanning, Office mode is the most useful — it gives you resolution, color, and output format controls without the full photo-editing options of Professional mode.
If you want to use Windows Fax and Scan or another WIA-compatible application instead of Epson’s own software, the scanner should appear as a device in those applications automatically after the combo install. If it doesn’t appear in Windows Fax and Scan, restart the Print Spooler service (Services.msc → Print Spooler → Restart) and try again.
The Fax Component
The WF-3640 includes a fax function. Fax software for Windows 11 requires Windows Fax and Scan, which is installed as an optional feature. If you want to use the fax functionality:
Go to Settings → Apps → Optional features → Add an optional feature → search for “Windows Fax and Scan” → install it.
After installing, the WF-3640’s fax modem should appear in Windows Fax and Scan automatically.
What If Epson’s Page Has Changed
Epson occasionally reorganizes their support site structure, and older product pages get moved or reorganized without redirects. If the URL above doesn’t work, search epson.com directly for “WF-3640” using the site’s search function. The driver package exists — Epson has maintained it — the navigation just isn’t always consistent for older models.
If you encounter the page but the download link itself is broken (downloads to a corrupted file or errors), try clearing browser cache and downloading again. Epson’s CDN occasionally has issues with older product pages. If it’s consistently broken, the archived driver in PrintPro Driver Pro has the WF-3640 covered from the original Epson package.
