# Brother Printer Driver
Brother printers — HL laser series, MFC and DCP all-in-one models — generally have good Windows 11 support, but the driver situation is more confusing than it should be. Brother offers multiple driver packages for the same printer, and installing the wrong one leaves scan, fax, or status monitoring broken.
Full Driver vs Basic Driver
Brother publishes two types of drivers for most models:
Full Driver & Software Package — includes print driver, scan driver (WIA/TWAIN), Brother iPrint&Scan, and status monitoring. Required for MFC and DCP all-in-one models.
Basic Driver — print only. Smaller download, but no scan support. Windows Update often installs this version automatically after a feature update, which is why scan stops working even though print still functions.
If you have an MFC-J, MFC-L, DCP-L, or HL-L series printer, always install the Full Driver package.
Common Brother Driver Problems on Windows 11
Scan disappears after Windows Update. Windows replaces the Full Driver with the Basic Driver from its update database. Print works; scan vanishes from Windows Scan and Brother iPrint&Scan.
Printer shows offline after every update. Brother’s status monitoring relies on SNMP polling configured in the Full Driver. The Basic Driver doesn’t include it, so Windows reports offline.
Brother support page shows Windows 10 driver only. Many Brother models use the same driver package for Windows 10 and 11. If Brother’s site lists Windows 10 but not 11, the Windows 10 Full Driver package typically installs and works on Windows 11 — install it in compatibility mode if the installer blocks you.
How to Install the Correct Brother Driver
- Go to Brother’s support site and search your exact model number (found on the printer label).
- Download the Full Driver & Software Package for your Windows version.
- Uninstall any existing Brother driver first (Device Manager → Uninstall with “Delete driver software” checked).
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Verify both print and scan after installation.
PrintPro detects Brother printers automatically, selects the Full Driver package (not the basic print-only version), and installs print and scan modules together — including for models where Brother’s website only lists older Windows versions.
